Describe: | The Nan Guan Hat Chair is one of the representative works of Ming-style furniture, characterized by its straight legs that curve downward without protruding armrests or backrests. Early evidence of this type of chair can be found in paintings from the Song and Yuan dynasties. Fully mortise-and-tenon joints, hand-woven wicker surfaces, exquisitely crafted; the Guan Hat Chair gets its name from its resemblance to the official hats worn by ancient officials. There are two types of Guan Hat Chairs: the Nan Guan Hat Chair and the Four-Outstretched Head Style Guan Hat Chair. Ancient hat styles were diverse, but those commonly known to the general public were often depicted in books and on stage. The design of the Guan Hat Chair was largely standardized as early as the Song Dynasty. |
